Gassner Award 2020

Marjorie Bicknell has been writing plays since her adaptation of Frankenstein was produced at Theatre Center Chicago and was the recipient of three Joseph Jefferson Awards in 1982.  Marjorie is also the author of full-length plays, The Family Room, winner of the 2003 Pennsylvania Playwright Award, and nominated for the Weissburger Prize by Open Stage of Harrisburg, The Boys Club, a winner of the 2012 TNT POPS! national new play contest as well as a finalist with Scrap Mettle (2015), HRC Showcase (2015) and CSC Women Playwright Series at the Centenary Stage Company (2016), as well as a farce, Joint Custody, and the dramas 2029 and The Author. Her one-act, Carmegeddon, is the 2020 winner of the HACC New Work Festival, and it is being published along with her 10-minute play, Carolee’s Closet by ARTemis Arts in their Women’s Wisdom anthology in the Fall of 2021.  Last year, her play, Another Conversation, was published by Dramatic Publishing in the anthology, As She Likes It. Marjorie is the Philadelphia Regional Rep for the Dramatists Guild, president emeritus of the Philadelphia Dramatists Center and founder of the Playwrights Alliance of Pennsylvania (PAPA).

Marjorie is an advertising copywriter and creative director and the owner of Bicknell Creative, a creative services boutique. She has written advertising for companies such as Prudential Insurance, Colonial Penn Insurance, Chase, Jenny Craig, Comcast, Verizon and others. She is the winner of over 40 advertising awards, including 20 Benjamin Franklin Awards for Excellence in Direct Marketing, and is the recipient of the Philadelphia Direct Marketing Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Marjorie resides in the Art Museum neighborhood of Philadelphia with her husband Ed Shapiro and enjoys walking her dog, Toby, to the Rocky Steps.
